Understanding Sciatic Nerve Pain

When people hear the phrase sciatica, they almost think of a sickness or a virus. It sounds scary, but in reality it’s just a symptom that is commonly associated with leg pain. Often, injuries can cause this pain to range anywhere from annoying to entirely disabling. Whether because of car accidents or other collisions, this pain can eventually hinder a person’s ability to walk entirely.

The most typical symptom of sciatic nerve injury is pain that can be felt in the lower back and just above the buttocks. This pain is sharp and can shoot down the leg. It can also be felt running down the thigh. In some cases, this pain may extend all the way to the foot. How severe the pain is relates to the extent of the damage, but very often it sends people looking for answers in order to reduce sciatic nerve pain.

Because the sciatic nerve exists on both sides of the back, it can affect both the left and right legs. If there is damage to the spine, it can increase the pain and also the level of disability. Is Hip Replacement Surgery for You?

For people with a painful hip joint from arthritis, hip replacement surgery could be a good option. Your surgeon will remove the original hip joint and replacement it with a man-made one. It often is made from a variety of metal and plastic.

Hip replacement may be done through traditional surgery, or via a minimally invasive technique. The main difference is simply how big the incision is.

These days, most surgery for hip replacement is done with a standard incision of eight to 10 inches in length. However, in the newer minimally invasive surgery, some surgeons are able to replace the hip through only one or two cuts that are only 2-5 inches long. The very same procedure is done through these small incisions as with the traditional surgery.

However, it is very important to select a surgeon who is skilled doing the less invasive technique. Research suggests that the outcomes with the minimally invasive technique may be not as good as with traditional surgery.

Note that whichever procedure you choose, you could have some amount of blood loss. So, your doctor may recommend that you bank some of your own blood before the operation.

Treating Sprains

Most of us have sprained an ankle, knee, wrist or shoulder at some point. They’re among the most common of all injuries. A sprain is basically a stretched or torn muscle or tendon and they aren’t hard to do. Simply tripping and twisting your ankle can do it. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising and stiffness or difficulty moving the affected muscle. Doctors generally recommend the RICE treatment:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

If sprains are severe short term physical therapy may be indicated. Exercise and stretching increases blood flow which in turn helps speed healing. If you cannot bear weight on the affected area for more than a few days, or swelling doesn’t decrease with ice and rest, you should let your doctor know. You could have a more serious tear or even a fracture. In most cases though, sprains heal nicely on their own. Use elastic bandage for compression and if needed, crutches or a sling for a few days to give the muscle a chance to rest and heal. If your doctor recommends physical therapy, do the exercises you’re given and follow the program they design for you. Doing so will get you back on your feet quicker and with less pain.
